+CHAPTER ONE+
=Taking Baby Steps=
************************************************
The Vongola Italy base was filled with the chitter chatters of everyone, working their asses off for the gala dinner that was to be held that night. With only half an hour away from the arrival of important guests and Giotto with G. and Asari from their mission in Spain, everyone had to double their working pace to make it in time. The grand hall was filled with the most beautiful flower decorations you can ever find in Italy. Lines and lines of the finest delicacies by the best chefs ever are set upon tables covered with white drapes decorated with gold embroideries. The big, gold Vongola emblem hung on the grand entrance to the hall, sparkling under big, diamonds chandeliers that hung from the high ceiling above.

Smiles decorated the faces of Giotto's family members, with everyone feeling very excited to welcome back their beloved boss. They helped out as much as they can to make sure that Giotto would be impressed when he comes back.

Knuckles marched down the hallways with a serious face, observing the outcomes of the hardwork everyone had done. Everyone stood in two straight lines to greet the ever-so-optimistic Sun Guardian.

"Good evening, Sir!!!" everyone bowed down simultaneously as Knuckles walked past them.

Knuckles stopped walking and placed his hands on both side of his waist. With an extremely broad smile, he looked around with satisfaction on how everything was going. "Good evening, everyone!!! All of you have been doing a great job! Keep it up to the extreme! Giotto will be happy to see everyone's good job when he comes back!" He radiated strong positive aura that made everyone worked more harder.

Lampo walked lazily beside Knuckles. "Heck...the wait is driving me crazy...for these few days, besides playing around with the girls, I had nothing else to do. But...I also feel so lazy to go back to work...can I not-"

"LAMPO!!!" Knuckles grabbed Lampo's shoulders. "You shouldn't say that! Giotto has done so much for us!! You are entrusted as his Lightning Guardian! You should be more than proud to have his trust!"

"Okay! Okay! I get it! Can you l-let me go now?? You're crushing my shoulders~" Lampo almost cried.

"Oh! Sorry, my bad~" Knuckles let go of Lampo's shoulders and turned to everyone. "Okay! It's almost time, so everyone go get ready now!"

Alaude, with his usual murderous aura radiating around him, walked past Knuckles and Lampo. "You guys should also go get ready now instead of bugging everyone to finish up their work. You annoy me." and he just continued to strut down the hallway with everyone parting like the Red Sea to allow Alaude to pass through.

"G-good evening, sir!!!" everyone nearly stumbled as they bowed down to greet Alaude. They were more than afraid to look into Alaude's murderous eyes.

"Hmph." with that, Alaude just ignored everyone and headed on walking down the hallway.

"Gyah, he's just too scary~" one of the Vongola member whispered. His voice was trembling greatly.

"Yeah~ I wonder why Sir Giotto even had the guts to entrust him as the Vongola's great Cloud Guardian." another member timidly spoke, not wanting to let Alaude hear his complaint.

"You know, I wish I have the guts to say that out loud right in front of Alaude's face." a girl's voice came out from behind the two Vongola underlings who complained about Alaude.

"M-Miss Arissa!!!!! Good evening!!!!!!!!" they bowed down immediately. "W-we didn't mean to say anything harsh about Sir Alaude!!"

"Oh, don't worry about that." Arissa smiled kindly. Her warm personality surely matched her husband perfectly. "But be sure not to spray it straight to his face. You should know the consequences." she blinked one eye at them. "Now, get back to work for the sake of Giotto, and if you would excuse me, I need to go prepare myself as well. I gotta get myself dressed in my new dress."Arisa turned around and walked away jumpily.

"Y-yes, Miss Arissa!!" they bowed down countless times before they scampered back to work.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Giella fastened a white, diamond choker around her neck as her lady-in-waiting helped to do her hair. With a touch of beidge ribbon, her hair was done. Her dressing mirror reflected the light from the chandelier above her head, illuminating her beauty perfectly.

"What do you think, Miss Giella? Do you like it?" Giella's favourite 17-year-old lady-in-waiting stood up straight with satisfaction. Reesa has been Giella's hairstylist since before, and she has taken care of Giella's hair real good.

Giella turned her head gently left and right to check her hairdo. "You always do the best, Reesa. Thank you very much." the 21-year-old smiled at Reesa.

There was a knock on Giella's room door. "Come in." Giella called out as she got herself ready. She hastily ran her fingers through her blonde hair.

Alaude walked into her room and gave a bow to her. "Good evening, Miss Giella. It's almost time for the gala." Alaude spoke with a gentle tone. It was obvious that the only person he'll speak with that tone, besides Giotto, is Giella. Alaude had never raised his voice at Giella, probably it was because of her calming ability, but it was still obvious that he cared about her more than he cared about anyone else.

Fear that Reesa would freak out by looking at Alaude's murderous eyes, Giella told her, "Uhh...Reesa, you should go get ready too. The dinner is less than 20 minutes away. I'll see you downstairs."

"O-okay, miss. Excuse me." Reesa bowed down to Giella and Alaude. She kept her eyes locked to the ground to avoid looking at Alaude.

"Good evening, Alaude. Thank you for coming to see me. Uhh...how do I look?" Giella stood up from her chair and spun a round slowly. Her gown flowed along with the direction that she spun. She then stood in front of Alaude and looked into his eyes with a smile. Usually, his eyes was murderous, but not when he looked at Giella.

"You look beautiful, Giella." Alaude complimented as he gave a bow. "And for the record, you always do."

"Well, to be honest, Alaude, you look stunning tonight." Giella smiled and walked towards him.

"Thank you for your compliment, Miss Giella. But I believe tonight's highlight will not be me."Alaude hold Giella's hand and guided her out of her room.

"And not me too. It's all about Giotto tonight." Giella said as she closed her room door. Alaude and Giella walked down the hall together. For a second there, people would think that he's Giella's date for the night, but he's just a protector, assigned by Giotto to take care of his beloved younger sister. Boy, Giotto sure do know the best for Giella.

As they were walking down the hallway leading towards the grand staircase, Giella sensed the presence of someone, watching them both in silence. She stopped her step, gripping Alaude's hand a little tighter.

Alaude stopped as well and turned to look at Giella, whose face was puzzled. "Is there something wrong, Miss Giella?" Alaude's voice dropped and became serious. With Giella's face looking like that, there was definitely something there.

"Kufufufufufufuu~ you certainly are as sharp as usual for someone who is not a Vongola Guardian, lovely Giella. And guess what, you should have been one, to replace the other one glaring at me now." Demon Spade appeared after a dark cloud disappeared. He laughed playfully as he tried to annoy Alaude, who hated Demon Spade since forever.

"Spade." Giella was satisfied with her answer that she guessed earlier, and she got it right.

Alaude let go of Giella's hand and as fast as lightning, he took out his handcuffs and stood guard in front of Giella. His eyes were full of fury, showing just how much he hates Demon Spade. "Back off, scum. For a Mist Guardian, you have no right to question on my position as the Cloud Guardian. Whether or not am I happy with it, it's not of your concern." Alaude clenched his hancuffs even tighter.

Demon Spade grinned and laid his back against the dark-coloured wall. "Goodness me, oh mighty Alaude. I wasn't talking to you, as you know. Did I mention how beautiful you look tonight, Giella?"

"You know it's the worse thing in your life to challenge my limits." Alaude sounded very angry and he was definitely ready to charge at the darn illusionist at any time.

"Oh, really? Well, then it's the worse thing in your life to say that you are being challenged by an illusionist. Mind if I show you how many ways I can get rid of you? Not to mention how easily I can get to Giotto with you not by his side." Demon Spade walked slowly and slumberly towards Alaude.

"Damn you~" Alaude was about to charge towards Demon Space when he felt a hand holding on to his left shoulder. He turned around to see the girl that he was entrusted to protect while her brother is gone, was looking into his eyes with a serious look. "Miss Giella...."

"Don't, Alaude....let there be no problems before my brother arrives....he wouldn't want to see this place wrecked by the both of you when he arrives..." Giella's eyes showed that she was worried, and in a few seconds, Alaude felt a sense of calmness running through his nerves. Giella turned to look at Demon Spade. "You too, Spade. You know how much Giotto hates to see you doing this. So, just...don't."

"Kufufufufu~ since you are the one who asked, then I shall kindly back out this time." he laughed and turned around.

"Spade." Giella tried to stop him. Demon Spade turned around to look at her. "Is there anything, princess?" He said with his playful smile.

"Are you....joining us for the gala tonight?" Giella's question was rather surprising, and Alaude just looked at her with surprise.

Demon Spade looked at her straight into her eyes. "Fufu...I can see how serious you are. Very well. I shall join you, maybe later. But, make sure I don't bump into...Mr Grumpypants here, or I can't guarantee your safety tonight."

"Oh good. Coz I remember clearly that the guest list stated 'Mafia' and not illusionists." Alaude smirked. He then felt someone grabbed his hand.

"Alaude, please...don't push it...." her silverish-grey eyes were so intense that it finally made him to give in to her orders. He gave his death stare at Demon Spade before keeping his handcuffs.

"Take care of her properly, Cloud Guardian. I may be needing her soon." then with a poof of dark clouds, Demon Spade disappeared. Alaude turned away immediately.

"Come on, Miss Giella. It's about time the gala starts." Alaude held out his hand for Giella's. Giella just gave a smile to him, not wanting to annoy him of what happened just a while ago. And both of them headed towards the grand ballroom.

Down in the grand ballroom, young Vincente was on duty that night to guard Giella as he was Alaude's underling. He seemed nervous about the whole gala that night. He felt somewhat uneasy, or he was just impatient to get a good look at the young mafia girl.

"So...you must be friggin excited to be able to be on Giella duty tonight, eh? Right? Right?" another member of Alaude's underling elbowed Vincente excitedly. "You have had a HUGE crush on her since, like, FOREVER~ I can't imagine how gaga you were all the time whenever you see her from afar."

Vincente's cheeks were flushed red. He had to admit that he has a HUGE crush on Giella ever since he was recruited to be Alaude's underling. "H-hey...stop it...."

"And, oh~here she is now, lover boy~" the other underling pointed straight to the grand staircase at Giella and Alaude making their grand entrance. "Oh, look!! She's with Sir Alaude!!!!"

Everyone applauded at the grand entracnce of Alaude and Giella. Giella gave a warm welcome smile to everyone whilst Alaude remained calm and silent, focusing on guiding Giella to the gala. When they approached the crowd, Giella heard a familiar voice calling out for her name.

"Giella dear!!!" Arissa fastened her pace towards Giella. "You're finally here!!!! Just when I thought you would lock yourself in your room until Giotto comes~" she gave a hug to Giella.

"Ahahah~heck no~I won't be doing that~I wouldn't wanna miss his grand entrance~ plus, he's my brother, and I have to be here to welcome him back. You must be really anticipating for Asari's arrival right? It has been two weeks." Giella hugged Arissa back.

"Of course! I've missed him so much...oh, good evening, Alaude. And may I say you look...surprisingly stunning~" Arisa smiled at Alaude.

"Thank you, Miss Arisa." Alaude bowed to Arisa. His voice still sounded mad.

"Okayy....what happened to our Cloud Guardian here..?" Arisa felt a little scared and backed down a little.

"Uhm...you...probably shouldn't know about it...or this whole gala's gonna end up in ashes..." Giella smiled sarcastically. "Uhh...Alaude...why don't you go...have some fun...?"

"I'll be on duty tonight. Maybe no. Vincente. Jorgan. Terrance." Alaude called out for three of his underling. "Make sure no one comes to create chaos with Miss Giella. If someone does, inform me. I'll bite them all to death."

"Roger!!" Vincente, Jorgan and Terrance answered in monotone as they watched Alaude with fear projecting in their eyes.

"Excuse me, Miss Giella." Alaude bowed down to her before he left the spot and disappearing among the crowd.

"Wow, he must have been really mad about whatever happened just now..." Arissa just stared at Alaude disappearing into the crowd.

"Well, let's not say anything about it and enjoy tonight to the extreme!!" Knuckles appeared behind the two girls and hung his hands over their shoulders.

"Okay, we know that , Knuckles." Giella laughed.

"Oh, my gosh~she just looks so cute no matter what she does...." Vincente said to himself.

The grand ballroom door opened. Everyone turned their heads to look at who was making their grand entrance. The Vongola members lined up in two perfect straight lines. Everyone elongated their heads to get a clearer view of the three guys who walked into the room majestically. Soon, all the Vongola members who were in the line gave a polite bow to the three majestic guys, and everyone got to see who was the three. There was a loud and long applause to greet the grand entrance of Giotto, G. and Asari.

"Oh, finally, he's here~ what a wait~" Lampo exclaimed impatiently.

"Wow, what an entrance~" Knuckles said with his usual optimisticness.

"Welcome back, brother." Giella ran towards Giotto and gave a big hug to him. She was just too excited too see Giotto that she couldn't help but run straight towards him and hug him in front of everyone.

"Good to see that you've been doing well these two weeks." instead of  feeling annoyed, Giotto hugged Giella back, showing just how much he loves his beloved sister.

G. purposedly cleared his throat loudly. "No public display of affections, please."

"Oh, come on, G., he's my brother , for goodness sake. I know how much you're respect him, but don't treat me like his enemy~" Giella sounded a little upset, but her smile still remained plastered on her face, hiding her real feelings from G..

"I-hey!!!" G. got angry with what Giella said.

"G., don't." Giotto's one-word order made G. stepped down. "I'm deeply sorry, Primo." G. gave a polite bow to Giotto.

"It's okay, G.. Just don't upset her that way. You know how much she loves me, and as her brother, I don't want her to get upset over this thing. Now, just go enjoy yourself tonight." Giotto smiled at all his guardians that gathered around him.

"Asari!!" Arissa walked up towards Asari and gave him a hug.

"Arissa~ oh, I've missed you so much~" Asari hugged his beloved wife tight into his arms and gave her a kiss on her forehead.

"Okayy...I think I should...leave you two alone~" Giella walked away slowly to avoid disturbing Asari and Arisa in their lovey-dovey time. "Heck, and I thought they were not gonna marry in a few months more..." Giella walked slowly towards the food table, taking a fried shrimp and took a small bite of it. She gave a huge sigh.

"Ah, Giella!! so you're here!! I finally found you!!!!" another familiar, and annoying, voice came out from behind Giella. Goosebumps covered her whole body when she got to know the owner of the voice - Cadra Ortolannis, the annoyingly rich and handsome brat, son of the mayor of Milan that all girls of her age were dying to chase. He had been madly in love with Giella and he would always find any means to stalk her. Heck, that just makes Giella wanna kill him.

"C-Cadra~wow...didn't know you would come along~~"Giella pretended to be surprised when in reality, she already knew Cadra was in the guest list.

'Of course I would come!! To see the most beautiful flower in Italy, I would die just to come and see you~" Cadra came closer to Giella, wanting to hug her. But his attempt was stopped by Vincente. "Uhh...excuse me? She's like, my future wife~" Cadra pushed Vincente's hand away. "Back off, scum!"

"Heck!!! Since when I'm known as your future wife???" Giella got freaked out with what Cadra said.

"Sir, I'm kindly asking you to back off from Miss Giella. no one is allowed to touch her tonight." Vincente sounded very serious. This is the first time ever someone else than Alaude and Giotto who was by her side to protect her, and she was very thankful to her personal bodyguard assigned by Alaude himself.

"Uhh, Giella dear, WHO is this brat? how dare he challenges me?" Cadra was annoyed with Vincente.

"Don't call me dear just yet. He's my bodyguard. it's just...he's just doing what he's supposed to do. So please, Cadra." Giella was very happy on how Vincente was protecting her. She really wanted to avoid Cadra.

"What? This scum is your bodyguard? Why would you need him if you're gonna have me? Oh, did I tell you that I was good in bed?" Cadra challenged Vincente.

"Sir Alaude has gave clear orders that no one is to disturb Miss Giella if she feels uncomfortable with them." Vincente sounded stern. He was entrusted by Alaude to take good care of the girl he has a huge crush on, and this was his ultimate opportunity to impress her.

"Alaude?? That Alaude? Hah!! He's nothing more than just a coward who hides himself away from everyone! Now, get away from my path, dumbass!!" Cadra warned.

"Cadra, no. You don't want to be in trouble with my brother. Not in front of his...people." Giella wanted to avoid the worse from happening.

"I SAID GET OUT OF MY WAY!!!!!" With one strong push of both his hands, Cadra pushed Vincente on the ground. "You deserve no bodyguard BUT ME!!!!" he grabbed Giella's arms tightly.

"No!!! Lemme go!!!!! AIUTATAMI, ALAUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!" Giella screamed for help and screamed for Alaude. And, surprisingly, Alaude came just in time to rescue Giella.

Alaude grabbed Cadra's shoulders so hard, that it nearly crushed his bones. "Didn't you hear what my underling said? He said that I personally gave orders to protect Giella from anyone that tries to create chaos with Miss Giella. Since you never heard his early warning, you've just landed yourself in deep trouble."

Cadra freaked out as he looked straight into the eyes of Giella's protector. "Uhh....how deep....?"

"I shall bite you to death." Alaude pulled Cadra's hand to let Giella go. Within a few seconds, he bashed Cadra up and walked away from Cadra slumberly. He took Giella by her hand, but she couldn't stand up. She injured her ankle when Cadra forcefully pulled her just now. Feeling the heavy pain against her delicate ankles, she sat down right beside Vincente. She took some time to catch some air before she turned to look at Vincente. She ran her hand over his forehead. "Are you okay, Vincente...? Thanks for backing me up just now..."

Vincente was touched on the way Giella treated him despite his failed attempt to protect her. He didn't know how to face her like a man, so he quickly stood up to run away. But when he was about to, Giella caught hold of his hand tight. He turned to look back at Giella, who was looking back at him with her eyes so intense but beautiful. "Please, Vincente...I can't thank you enough for your bravery of backing me up...accept my gratitude or I won't be able to go through a peaceful night tonight..." Those eyes made his heart race even more. He didn't want to let her see his blushing face, so he pulled his hand away from her and ran off. Giella just looked at him ran.

"Giella!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, my gosh, are you okay??" Arissa came running at Giella and gave a big comforting hug to her.

"Catch him and throw him out of this place. Give a full report on Cadra's behaviour to his father right now." Giotto ordered his men as he walked towards Giella. "Are you okay, Giella?"

"Yeah...I'm fine....Vincente bought enough time for Alaude to come and save me..." Giella's voice trailed off as she remembered Vincente's ocean blue eyes looking back at her. His eyes was somewhat filled with lonliness.

"Thank you, Alaude." Giotto said with a grateful voice to Alaude.

"Just doing my job to protect Giella as you asked me to." Alaude looked at Giella, who was still struck by a little trauma.

The rest of the gala dinner that night continued with Giotto's good attempt of handling things well. Alaude escorted Giella back to her room. Giella dropped onto her bed like a leaf and fell into deep slumber in a mere few seconds.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Giella woke up a little earlier than usual the next morning. The image of Vincente's eyes kept flashing across her mind. It was making her very uneasy to know the fact that Vincente refused to accept her heartiest gratitude. Desperate to go search for him, she got herself ready and rushed down for breakfast before going for her usual horseback riding session each morning.

After breakfast, she went out for her horseback riding session. She rode her white horse across the vast garden that belonged to the Vongola manor. The cool spring wind took some pressure off her shoulders. All her worries about last night just seems to disappear. She felt a sense of warmth in her heart, until Vincente flashed across her mind again. She pulled her horse to a stop. She looked around and there he was - Vincente was stading under a shady tree, staring blankly into space. Determined to find out what was he thinking about, she rode her horse to him. She smiled at him as he looked up to see her.

"Buongiorno, Vincente."

Vincente nearly fell down as he tried to stand up straight. He bowed down hastily. "B-Buongiorno, Miss Giella!!!!"

Giella laughed as she got down from her horse to see the way Vincente acts. She combed her fingers through her horse's mane and said to it, "Voglio andare lì per un po ', va bene? Ti chiamo quando ho bisogno di te al più presto." The horse seemed to have understood what Giella said to it and strutted away from the spot to the grassy grounds to graze. Vincente observed Giella's actions in anxiety. He didn't knew what she wanted from him.

Giella turned around and walked towards Vincente. Her face shows no fear as she approached her saviour from last night. She have never seen Vincente from up close as Alaude is usually the one who personally guards her, but she had seen him from afar a few times. Everytime she sees him, he would be very serious in carrying out his duties. Last night was the first time he recieved duties to protect her and he did a great job.

"Can I join you?"

"Uhh...s-s-sure...." Vincente answered with his shaky voice as he watched the girl of his dreams lean against the same tree that he was leaning on. He was pretty nervous to face her again after what had happened last night.

"Listen..." Giella kept looking at her feet. "About what happened last night....grazie...and I hope...you will accept my gratitude....what you did last night was really something...usually I'd only put my trust in Alaude as he is the one that my brother had entrusted to protect me. But last night....you were the only one among the three who was assigned personally by Alaude that stood up to protect me...you didn't care about Cadra's identity and just did what you were supposed to do...so...thank you..."

Vincente looked at Giella with surprise knowing that she wasn't mad at him last night for being such a loser in front of her but instead she still insisted to thank him. "P-prego, Miss Giella..."

"Please. Just call me Giella will be fine...I don't really appreciate people calling me 'Miss' wherever I go...heck, I'm not royalty. Oh, since we haven't properly introduced ourselves...." Giella laughed and held out her right hand to him. "Giella."

Vincente saw that sincere look in her eyes. He could see that she is someone who could get along with everyone that she talks to. She does not fake her feelings and instead, she just lets it all out. "I'm Vincente Catena." He took hold of her right hand and shook it. Vincente began to loosen up as he tries to get used to talking to the sister of his boss. He didn't want to be a prisoner of his own fear to meet new people. He isn't all that close to all of his colleagues as he was just too shy to talk to them, so he'd take this as a brand new start in his life.

"So...we should hang out more often. You are at least farby the easiest person to approach among all the Vongola people. The rest is just too respective of me and they would run away whenever they see me coz they thought I was about to kill them or something." Giella joked.

"But...Sir Alaude wou-"

"Don't worry about Alaude. His my protector, so I share half the rights to decide what to do with his underlings." Giella smiled at him. Her smile made him blush and his heart raced faster. He hid his blush by covering his cheeks with his hands.

"Uhh...o-okay then..."

"Okay. Oh, shoot. I gotta go now. Giotto is bringing me out for a mission today. See ya around!!" Giella waved goodbye and walked towards her horse. With one whistle, her horse came running at her. She climbed up her horse. "Portami a casa. Giotto mi sta aspettando." she said to her horse before whistling again with another tune. The horse strode off, carrying its owner together with it. Giella turned around to wave at Vincente again before disappearing from his sight.

Vincente fell onto the ground and grabbed his blonde hair. He held in his nervousness too long. Her face flashed across his mind again and again. Whenever he does, he blushes and his heart beat increases so rapidly that he felt like he was going to get a heart attack any time soon. It was official, he told to himself, you're in love with Giella....
